Dead Roses is a rock band; dueling Danelectro guitars flanking a six foot two bass wielding vocalist backed up by a ferocious drummer pounding out destruction. Songs like "I Death You to Death" with its single string guitar melody and skeletal song structure imparts the sense that end is near while cheerleading the urgency to party with reckless abandon. "Are You Feeling Hostile" would satisfy the staunchest of Iggy fans. "Rock Is Dead" is an anthem to fuel a new rock movement with its lyrical playfulness that pinpoints the weaknesses that has lead to the decline of rock music. DR's sound is fueled by the power of the dirge, a self constructed post apocalyptic sonic miasma of feedback, precision bass mechanics and thunderous power drumming.
Lo-fi dance beats with hot, wild guitar poured on top! Soulful howls screaming out of the garage. Super-raw one-man-band anti-pop. Dogs are barking. Kids are dancing...the Wiggins are playing!
A post-punk boot stomp with smarts. Take the day to day concerns of the working stiff, the anger and frustration of living in today's society, and the confusion or exasperation of trying to do something original in an unoriginal medium and you have the ingredients of birth to burial. A shitty commute, an admired co-worker, a self-absorbed media, freezing to death, or better yet an incredible, sunny day somehow become songs for us.
(Editor's note: I caught this band in Dallas this summer and they totally blew me away. Although they're great songs, I don't think that these mp3s do much justice to their live show. Come out a little early and see something you've never seen before!)
